What Is a Cryogenic Tank? Operating Principle and Applications
What Is a Cryogenic Tank?
Cryogenic tanks are specially engineered double-walled, vacuum-insulated pressure vessels designed to safely store, transport, and utilize liquefied gases at temperatures of –150°C (120 K) and below.
These tanks play a critical role in the storage of the following industrial gases:
- Liquid Oxygen (LOX)
- Liquid Nitrogen (LIN)
- Liquid Argon (LAR)
- LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)
- Hydrogen / Helium (with special tank designs)
Note: Liquid Carbon Dioxide (LCO₂) is not considered a cryogenic gas; however, it requires low-temperature storage and is contained in specially engineered insulated tanks using similar technologies.
Harsan Tanker & Cryogenic manufactures high-vacuum, insulated cryogenic tanks at its production facility in Kocaeli, providing reliable solutions for a wide range of industries—from healthcare to energy—while complying with international standards.
Operating Principle of Cryogenic Tanks
The primary function of a cryogenic tank is to minimize heat transfer and maintain liquefied gas at the required low temperature and pressure.
To achieve this, the tanks are designed with the following elements:
1. Inner Vessel
- Constructed from stainless steel (typically 304L / 316L)
- Serves as the primary pressure vessel that holds the liquefied gas
- Highly resistant to corrosion and extremely low temperatures
2. Outer Vessel
- Manufactured from carbon steel
- Protects the inner vessel from external impacts
- Functions as the main structural support element
3. Vacuum Layer (Thermal Barrier)
- A high-vacuum space exists between the inner and outer vessels
- Significantly reduces heat transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation
- Insulated using:
- Super Insulation (MLI – Multi-Layer Insulation), or
- Perlite filling
- Super Insulation (MLI – Multi-Layer Insulation), or
4. Pressure Control & Safety Equipment
- Pressure Building Unit (PBU)
- Safety relief valves
- Pressure gauges
- Level gauges (Rochester / cryogenic level transmitters)
- Burst disks
These components ensure stable, safe, and long-term tank performance.
